Dj-Kicks è una storica serie di mix, affidati di volta in volta dall’etichetta indipendente !K7 alle sapienti mani dei migliori producer e dj mondiali. Di qui sono passati Chromeo, Digitalism, Carl Craig, Apparat, The Glimmers, James Holden, Hot Chip, Tiga, Four Tet e tanti altri.
Il Dj-Kicks che più mi è rimasto nel cuore porta la firma di Erlend Oye, l’occhialuto membro dei Kings of Convenience. Un mix in cui si alternano Phoenix e Villalobos, Jürgen Paape e Cornelius, The Rapture e Morgan Geist. Semplicemente magistrale.
Il prossimo 29 ottobre la !K7 pubblica la sua quarantaquattresima “puntata”, mixata dagli Hercules & Love Affair, progetto nato a New York dalla mente di Andy Butler. Nel 2008 l’omonimo album – prodotto dalla DFA – riscuote un enorme successo; nel 2011 il bis con Blue Songs, licenziato dalla Moshi Moshi. Ora Andy si mette alla prova con un mix frizzante ed eclettico, dove trovano spazio due inediti, uno degli stessi Hercules & Love Affair (Release Me, brano a cavallo tra house, electro e disco, cantato da Whitney Fierce) e l’altro degli Haze Factory (A Bit of Redemption).
L’approccio di Andy è facilmente riconoscibile: dare spazio a sonorità house-disco della New York degli ultimi trent’anni e al groove della Chicago house. Le chicche sono parecchie: su tutte probabilmente Africa Freedom (Johannesburg mix dub) di Z.A.M. con il connubio di tribal sound e accenni electro-disco. Come dice il producer newyorchese, “questo pezzo è stato importante per me per lungo tempo. È stato sempre l’inno dei nostri after-party”.
Dopo essere stato la settimana scorsa a Foligno e Firenze, Andy Butler presenterà (accompagnato, pare, da due vocalist del gruppo) l’album domani al Tunnel per Le Cannibale e il prossimo mese a Roma per i 10 anni di L-Ektrica (con Breakbot+Irfane e Flight Facilities). Appuntamento imperdibile.

According to my opinion, the best Dj-Kicks is the one of Erlend Oye, the four-eyed member of Kings of Convenience. A mix which mashs up Phoenix, Villalobos, Jürgen Paape, Cornelius, The Rapture and Morgan Geist. Masterly!
On the 29th of October the !K7 is gonna publish its forty-fourth episode, mixed by Hercules & Love Affair, Andy Butler’s project born in New York. In 2008 the homonymous album – produced by DFA – was successful; then in 2011 Blue Songs, published by Moshi Moshi. Now Andy is putting himself to the test with a sparkling and eclectic mix, where you can find two inedited tracks: the first one of Hercules and Love Affair themselves (Release Me, singed by Whitney Fierce, between house, electro and disco) and the second one of Haze Factory (A Bit of Redemption).
The Andy’s approach is easily recognizable: relying on house-disco sonorities of last thirty years-New York scene and groove of Chicago house. The gems are quite a lot: above all probably Africa Freedom (Johannesburg mix dub) by Z.A.M., union of tribal sound and electro-disco arpeggios. “This song has meant something for so long to me. It was always our after party anthem”, the producer says.
After being the last week in Foligno and Firenze, Andy Butler (accompanied – it seems so – by two vocalists of the project) is gonna present the album tomorrow at Tunnel for Le Cannibale and next month in Rome for the ten years of L-Ektrica (with Breakbot+Irfane and Flight Facilities).
