Berlino e New York, synth e testi arrabbiati, “veganesimo” e collaborazioni con brand di moda ecosostenibili, critica all’industria musicale e approccio fortemente libertario. Sono i tanti indizi che compongono il puzzle dell’identità dei Notic Nastic, coppia electro con due album all’attivo: It’s Dark but It’s Okay – licenziato nel 2010 dalla Shitkatapult (che ha in organico anche Apparat, CLP, Motor, T. Raumschmiere, Warren Suicide) – e Fullscreen dell’anno successivo – autoprodotto e distribuito sempre dalla Shitkatapult.
Le sonorità – soprattutto quelle del primo LP – e lo stile rievocano la “poetica” electroclash, pur nella profonda versatilità dei Notic Nastic, che permette loro di spaziare dal synthpop alla techno fino a qualcosa di più sperimentale.
ElectroMode li ha intervistati.
¥ – La vostra identità è avvolta nel mistero. Potreste svelare almeno l’origine dei Notic Nastic? Quali sono le vostre influenze?
Siamo tutti amici (producer, autori, artisti) e condividiamo una visione simile. Notic Nastic è il progetto artistico che rappresenta il nostro stile di vita e ciò che amiamo del mondo.
¥ – Il vostro progetto – musicalmente ed esteticamente – sembra richiamarsi al periodo electroclash. Se è così, cosa vi piace dell’electroclash?
È divertente, ce lo dicono in molti 🙂 In realtà, non ci siamo mai rifatti all’electroclash. Non è mai stato un nostro ascolto e non conosciamo tante band electroclash. La musica è semplicemente qualcosa di libero e selvaggio e capita che privilegiamo le sonorità elettroniche. Così diventa un’elettronica ribelle. Forse per questo la gente ci ricollega all’electroclash.
¥ – Lo scorso anno siete stati all’Electrode Fest a Roma: il vostro live è stato più di un semplice concerto, piuttosto un esempio di performing art. Perché avete scelto la musica per esprimervi?
La musica ti fa stare bene, muoversi e danzare è divertente! Alla gente piace. È un modo eccezionale per comunicare senza parlare. È tutto naturale, non c’è niente di costruito.
¥ – I vostri due album sembrano muoversi musicalmente nella stessa direzione. Cosa li differenzia?
Fullscreen è pieno di synth incalzanti e le canzoni sono un po’ più strutturate. It’s dark but it’s ok è forse più una raccolta di brani che sono stati buttati giù nel giro di un anno e mezzo. Fullscreen è stato concepito in un tempo ben più breve ed è stato pensato come un album. Entrambi sono pensati per essere ballati o ascoltati al massimo volume.
¥ – La vostra ultima produzione è Hypnokiss, risultato della collaborazione con il brand di moda ecosostenibile Umasan. Potreste spiegare il progetto?
Umasan è il più importante brand di moda vegana. Perfetto! Noi siamo vegani e siamo interessati al concetto d’impiegare il denaro con consapevolezza perché il denaro è incredibilmente potente nel modellare l’economia e il mondo. Umasan e Notic Nastic non possono che lavorare bene insieme. Noi abbiamo fatto da modelli, autori di musica e testi e Umasan ha curato la parte dello styling. Abbiamo lavorato anche con un ottimo video team per la riuscita del progetto.
¥ – Notic Nastic non è semplicemente “dance-music”. Date molta importanza ai testi. “Eye on you” sembra essere influenzata da 1984 di Orwell. Frasi come “I was freed from an automated life” o “when I wake up I wanna up smash everything” descrivono la vostra filosofia: la condanna dell’industria musicale e dello stile di vita capitalistico. Come combattete il sistema? Può la musica essere “rivoluzionaria”?
Siamo stanchi di mezzi come Facebook che catturano tutte le informazioni, della pubblicità e dell’industria culturale che subliminalmente ti dice cosa pensare sin da giovani. Arrivi al punto che non sai nemmeno più quali siano i tuoi gusti e le tue opinioni, perché fondamentalmente ti sono imposti. Più andiamo avanti, più il mondo diventa uno stato di polizia dove tutte le tue azioni sono controllate e tu sei schiacciato. Così domina una logica della paura.
La musica c’incoraggia ad aprire gli occhi, essere consapevoli della situazione, prendersi la responsabilità del proprio stile di vita. Non si tratta di essere contro qualcosa; è piuttosto un essere a favore della consapevolezza e dell’agire.
Il primo step è accettare che il mondo funziona in una maniera di cui non possiamo essere orgogliosi. Bisogna poi pensare a come spendere i nostri soldi e come interagire in questo mondo facendo una scelta cosciente di vita e sostenendo ciò in cui crediamo. Non si tratta di giudicare gli altri; si tratta invece di capire che abbiamo molto più potere di quanto pensiamo e che possiamo cambiare le cose se siamo disposti a cambiare noi stessi.
¥ – Il rapporto verità/menzogna permea i vostri testi. Perché lo considerate così importante?
Ci sentiamo ingannati dal sistema e dalle elite di potere. Ancora una volta, non siamo contro il sistema e non è così interessante per noi essere “anti”. Ma non accettiamo il lavaggio del cervello a cui siamo sottoposti per quanto riguarda gusti e opinioni. Gira tutto intorno a quell’1% di poteri forti. Loro hanno i nostri soldi, non possiamo rimanere passivi.
Tutto ciò è così stupido e per questo siamo arrabbiati.

Poi elabori la tua rabbia e vai oltre
Infine intraprendi un’azione positiva, perché conosci la verità e vuoi vedere un futuro più luminoso.
¥ – Quali sono i vostri progetti per il futuro?
Pensiamo a come usare la nostra musica. Gli artisti hanno il potere di parlare alle persone. Essere un musicista può diventare una grande responsabilità e una grande opportunità nei confronti degli altri. Vogliamo fare nostra questa idea.

These are the clues which put together the puzzle of identity of Notic Nastic, two people and two albums already produced: It’s Dark but It’s Okay – published in 2010 by Shitkatapult (the label which produces Apparat, CLP, Motor, T. Raumschmiere, Warren Suicide) – and Fullscreen in 2011. The sound – especially the one of the first LP – and the style refer to the electroclash, even considering the versatility of Notic Nastic, which allows them to range from synthpop to techno to experimental music.

¥ – Your identity is shrouded in mystery. Could you disclose at least the reason and the origin of Notic Nastic? What are your influences?
We are all friends (music-producers, songwriters, artists) and we share a similar vision. Notic Nastic is like the art project that represents our life style and what we love about the world. It is just a reflection of us and the planet.
¥ – Your project – musically and aesthetically – seems to refer to electroclash period. If so, what do you like about electroclash?
That’s funny, we get that a lot 🙂 Actually, we never thought much about electro clash and can’t say much about it although are surely not against it. We never listened to it growing up or anything and we aren’t familiar with many electro clash bands. At the end of the day the music is just kinda wild and free and it happens to use electronics as a medium…. So it is rebellious electronic music. Maybe that reminds people of electro clash.
¥ – Last year you were at Electrode Fest in Rome: your live was more than a simple concert, rather an example of performing art. So, why have you chosen the music to express yourself?
Music feels good. moving and dancing is fun! People like it. It’s a great way to communicate without talking. So it just all felt natural. Maybe we never sat down and said it should be like this and that. It is simply how it turned out.
¥ – Your two albums seem to move – as far as the music is concerned – in the same direction. Which feature does differentiate them?
The Fullscreen album flows with soaring synths and the songs are a bit more structured. It’s dark but it’s ok is maybe more a compilation of songs that were created over the course of a one and a half yearwhile Fullscreen was created in a shorter amount of time and it is meant to be an album. Both albums are pretty full on and meant to dance to or to be heard at massive volume.
Also Fullscreen all had this similar theme of opening your eyes and maybe feeling angry about what you see and asking for a change. In the future, we are going to bring on the change.
¥ – Your latest production is Hypnokiss, outcome of the collaboration with the eco-sustainable fashion brand Umasan. Could you illustrate the project?
Umasan is the worlds first high fashion vegan label. And they are right around the corner from us! We are vegan and we are interested in the movement of spending money with awareness because our money is so powerful in shaping the economy and the world. Umasan and Notic Nastic therefore are a great team. Notic Nastic was the model, the producer of the music and came up with the script and Umasan did the fashion and styling. We also worked with a great video team to bring the project to life.
¥ – Notic Nastic isn’t just “dance-music”. You give great importance to the lyrics. “Eye on you” seems to be influenced by Orwell 1984. Sentences like “I was freed from an automated life” or “when I wake up I wanna up smash everything” describe your concept: the condemnation of musical industry and capitalistic lifestyle. How do you kick against the system? Can the music be “revolutionary”?
We were kind of tired of Facebook getting all our information and advertising and entertainment that subliminally tells you what to think from a very young age. You get to the point where you don’t even know what your own tastes and opinions are anymore because most of them are drilled into you. Also, as we move along in time the world becomes more and more like a police state where all of our actions are monitored and we, the people, get bullied a lot. There is a lot of fear used against us.
The music encourages us to open our eyes and be aware of this and to take some responsibility in our own life style. It isn’t really anti anything. It is pro awareness and pro action.
The first step is to accept that the world functions in a way most of us would not be proud of if we really thought about it. Then to think about how we spend our money and how we interact in that world and make a conscious choice to live in a way, that supports things we can believe in and be proud of.
At the end of the day, when we are supporting sweat shops and human exploitation or the mainstream live stock industry etc…most of us would be pretty sad if we knew where our money really goes. It isn’t about casting a judgement on anyone either, it is about helping us all to understand that we have more power than we realize and that we can change things if we are willing to change ourselves.
¥ – The relationship truth/lies permeates your lyrics. Why do you consider it so important?
We felt kind of lied to by the system and the elite. Once again. We are not against the system and it isn’t so interesting for us to be ‘anti’. But we realized how we got brainwashed a lot to have certain tastes and opinions about how things should be. And so much of that is just what the ruling powers (the 1%) wants us to believe so they have our money and we stay passive.
We thought that was stupid so we got kinda mad.
First you get mad
Then you get over it
Then you take positive action, because you know the truth and you wanna see a brighter future
¥ – What do you have in mind for the future?
Talking about solutions and using our music as the vehicle. Artists have a lot of power to speak to people, and they have throughout history. Being a musician can be a great responsibility and a great opportunity to inspire others. We want to embrace that idea.
