Man Power @Beats in Space

Il tempo della maturità e dell’identità è al fin giunto. Il misterioso producer Man Power dà alle stampe il suo primo Lp, prodotto dalla Correspondant di Jennifer Cardini. E per l’occasione mostra al pubblico il suo viso.

I lettori di ElectroMode già conoscono le qualità del musicista berlinese di adozione. Le sue produzioni con Eskimo e l’Hivern Discs di John Talabot sono state inserite rispettivamente nel Best of 2014 e nella playlist #1. L’album d’esordio di Man Power è la prosecuzione organica dei suoi lavori precedenti e allo stesso tempo segna uno scarto rispetto a quelle intuizioni, più legate a una ‘poetica’ clubbing.

STEVE REICH COME INFLUENZA

Si tratta di un Lp esuberante, refrattario a ogni classificazione di comodo. Vi si avverte la potenza e la novità della prima volta, la capacità di giocare con generi e influenze. Man Power riconosce l’importanza delle sue fonti di ispirazione (in un’intervista a Xlr8r cita Laurie Anderson, Steve Reich e i Tangerine Dream), ma non si limita a uno sterile epigonismo. Hunting of Swan, Inside e Ten sono i brani che meglio esprimono questa vicinanza-lontananza. Sono tracce da colonna sonora, musica fatta per immagini. Inside, per esempio, è un irresistibile divertissement, una rivisitazione ironica della produzione di Steve Reich e Philip Glass. Giocoso e solenne allo stesso tempo.

L’IMPORTANZA DI CHIAMARSI BERLINO

L’altra grande influenza è Berlino. Non potrebbe essere diversamente, considerata la fortissima vocazione musicale della capitale tedesca. Man Power fa parte – insieme con Moscoman, Hugo Capablanca, Paramida – di un ‘movimento’ che ha il proprio centro d’irradiazione nel Salon Zur Wilden Renate. Qui si parla la lingua dell’house, della tech-house, dell’electro acida. Boys Beware è – con i suoi bassi corposi e con una struttura minimalista lontana anni luce dall’elettronica massimalista à la Ed Banger – un omaggio alla scuola berlinese e al Zur Wilden Renate. La Germania è ancora presente come stimolo creativo in French Basic (nonostante il nome): i rimandi alle sonorità dei Kraftwerk sono abbastanza evidenti.

Man Power mostra il suo lato più pop in Bielsteiner. Mick Rolfe dei Last Waltz accompagna con la voce l’unica traccia non strumentale dell’Lp. Si avverte, invece, un’eco electroclash in Tofu ist der Teufel, pezzo a metà strada tra le produzioni di Vitalic & Linda Lamb e quelle di Alex Ridha ai tempi di 909D1SCO.

Man Power sarà l’11 luglio in Italia a Nocera Inferiore, in occasione del Fienga Village Festival (evento che ospiterà tra giugno e settembre nomi di nicchia come Tornado Wallace, Zombies in Miami, Young Marco, Telespazio, Black Merlin).

The mysterious producer Man Power has just released his self-titled debut album on Correspondant. And he has decided to show himself to the audience for the occasion.

ElectroMode readers know his qualities. His releases with Eskimo and Hivern Discs were chosen for some of our playlists. Man Power’s debut album is the organic continuation of his previous work, but it also differs from those ‘intuitions’ (bound to a clubbing dimension).

MAN POWER: INFLUENCES

It is an exuberant album, impossible to classify. You can feel power, freshness and the ability to play with genres and influences. In an interview to Xlr8r the Jennifer Cardini’s protégé cited Laurie Anderson, Steve Reich and Tangerine Dream as influences; he doesn’t limit himself, however, to a fruitless epigonism. Hunting of Swan, Inside and Ten are the tracks which express better this proximity-distance. They are music for images, ideal for a soundtrack. Inside, for example, is an irresistible divertissement, an ironic redefinition of the work of Steve Reich and Philip Glass. It is both playful and solemn.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING BERLIN

The other great influence is Berlin. It could not be otherwise, if you look at the strong musical vocation of the German capital. Man Power is part – together with Moscoman, Hugo Capablanca, Paramida and others – of a ‘movement’ which has its cultural centre in Salon Zur Wilden Renate. Here you speak the language of house, tech-house, acid electro. Boys Beware is – with its energic basses and a minimalist structure, light years away from maximalist electro à la Ed Banger – an homage to Berlin culture. Germany is also present as inspiration in French Basic: cross references to Kraftwerk’s sound are undeniable.

Bielsteiner is the ‘pop track’ of the album. Mick Rolfe (Last Waltz) sings on the only not-instrumental track of the Lp. Tofu ist der Teufel – midway between Vitalic & Linda Lamb’s production and that one by Alex Ridha/909D1SCO – recalls an electroclash sound.

Man Power is going to be in Italy on the 11^th of July on the occasion of Fienga Village Festival (Tornado Wallace, Zombies in Miami, Young Marco, Telespazio, Black Merlin are other acts, scheduled between July and September).
