Poi guardo il Google Doodle di oggi e gli angoli della bocca virano miracolosamente all’insù.

Se non l’avete ancora visto, eccolo, magari fa lo stesso effetto anche a voi.

93 anni dalla nascita di Saul Bass, il genio della grafica applicata alla settima arte, e mi ritrovo a tossire ipnotizzata davanti allo schermo.

Se non si è capito, la cosa che più mi manda in estasi – oltre alla moda – è il cinema, seguito da design, illustrazione, fotografia e via così.

Cinema + design + grafica = locandine e titoli di testa + genio = Saul Bass.

Saul è l’uomo a cui si deve la svolta creativa nelle sequenze introduttive dei film e alcuni dei poster cinematografici più memorabili.

Uno dei massimi graphic designer e pubblicitari di sempre che per caso si vede affidata nel 1954 la locandina di Carmen Jones di Otto Preminger.

Da lì alla successiva carriera al servizio di nomi come Preminger, Aldrich, Kubrick, Wilder, Scorsese e il venerato Maestro Hitchcock il passo è breve.

Lo stile essenziale di derivazione costruttivista e Bauhaus – al college fu allievo di Gyorgy Kepes, a sua volta discepolo di Laszlo Moholy-Nagy – nelle sue mani trasuda metafore e rimandi che avvolgono tutto in un alone di mistero.

Inutile dire che il top sia nella categoria titoli sia in quella poster per me è Vertigo (ammetto però di non essere esattamente imparziale),

ma tra Anatomy of a Murder e The Man with the Golden Arm, North by Northwest e Psycho la lotta è dura.

Then I’ve looked the Google Doodle and a smile has appeared on my face.

Saul Bass, the genius of the graphics applied to the cinema, has born 93 years ago.

Cinema + design + graphics = posters and opening credits + genius = Saul Bass.

Saul is the man who inserted the creativity in the movies’ opening credits and gave life to some of the most unforgettable cinematographic posters. One of the greatest graphic designers and publicists of all time, in 1954 Saul started his cinematographic career by chance with the Otto Preminger’s Carmen Jones poster.

From Carmen Jones to Aldrich, Kubrick, Wilder, Scorsese and the Master Hitchcock the step was short.

His style inspired by Constructivism and Bauhaus – his college teacher was Gyorgy Kepes, pupil of Laszlo Moholy-Nagy – hides metaphors and cross references that envelope everything in an air of mistery.

Obviously in my opinion the top is Vertigo, but among Anatomy of a Murder and The Man with the Golden Arm, North by Northwest and Psycho there is a fight to the death.
